The Art of the Commission

A Note from Ryan
One of the questions that guides nearly every hospitality project we undertake is: how can we make the hotel experience as much of a cultural destination as the trip itself? We don't approach a project by simply matching artwork to interiors. We begin much earlier, often while a property is still taking shape. We work alongside ownership, the architects, and the designers to understand the vision and determine what role art can play. From there, we draw on decades of relationships with artists, gallerists, and fabricators to translate that vision into something exclusive to the property. We guide every commission from the first sketch through the final installation so there are no surprises on site.
Ultimately, we want the hotel's art collection to feel exclusive, timeless, and connected to place. This month, we're introducing a new series taking you inside the process of building an exclusive art collection, from defining the story to installing the final work.
Warmly,

Step 1: Defining the Story
Most people encounter a collection when it's finished, paintings hung, sculptures installed; as though it always belonged there. What they don't see is how early the process begins. Before we even recommend a single artist, we immerse ourselves in the project. We study the architecture, the regional history, local materials, and the vision set by ownership and design.

At Hotel del Coronado, the challenge was finding a contemporary way into a story guests already knew. Rather than leaning on familiar coastal imagery, the collection reinterpreted the property's history through contemporary practice. Historic photographs were transformed via silkscreen, new work was commissioned from local artists, and delicate graphite botanicals by Margot Glass were included. The result is unmistakably connected to Coronado without illustrating it literally. That distinction is the point, our goal is to curate a sense of place, without doing an obvious interpretation of it.
Up Next: Finding the Artist
Once the story is defined, the next question is who should tell it.
In September, we'll share how we move from narrative to artist, including why we match artists with a project rather than with a style.
