DASHIELL MANLEY / this is now
March - May 2025
Dashiell Manley (b. 1983, Fontana, California) cultivates idiosyncratic techniques intertwined with East Asian traditions of mindfulness, manifesting a range of psychological states throughout his work. His practice is characterized by focused, repetitive, and often labor-intensive processes. Drawing on emotional responses to current events and 21st-century socio-political realities, Manley painstakingly builds compositions through methods akin to Zen Buddhist practices.
Manley’s work is held in the collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Palm Springs Art Museum; and the Pomona College Museum of Art. His work was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University in 2016, and in 2017 he presented a solo public art project with LAND, Los Angeles. He has participated in major exhibitions including the 2014 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art; Variations: Conversations In and Around Abstract Painting at LACMA; and Made in L.A. at the Hammer Museum. Manley received his BFA from the California Institute of the Arts and his MFA from the University of California, and he lives and works in Los Angeles.
