ALLISON SCHULNIK | this is now

March - May 2025

Allison Schulnik (b. 1978, San Diego, CA) works across painting, sculpture, and animation, seamlessly transitioning between mediums while imbuing her work with a sensibility that blends theatricality and emotional vulnerability. Known for her uncanny exploration of nostalgia, memory, and dreams, Schulnik constructs complex, contemporary narratives that traverse internal and immaterial landscapes, including reflections on motherhood and life filtered through desert environments.

An important figure in the Los Angeles art scene, Schulnik relocated with her family from Los Angeles to the Mojave Desert region in 2018. This shift marked a notable evolution in the tone and subject matter of her work, which now focuses on the flora, fauna, and wildlife of her surroundings. Through expressive encaustic oil paintings, playful ceramics, and stop-motion animation, Schulnik’s work aligns with a lineage of artists who have sought personal meaning and introspection within the desert landscape. She lives and works in Sky Valley, California.
